Subject: Pegasus Mail v4.0 public preview available.
A public preview of Pegasus Mail v4.0 is now available. This is actually beta 40 from the closed beta cycle, but my test team and I have judged that the remaining rough edges do not impact significantly on the reliability or usability of the program and that it is therefore a good candidate for preview.
Time constraints have meant that we have not been able to package the
preview with an installer - installing it is a slightly manual process and requires an unzip utility of some kind (WinZIP is excellent).
A "readme" file describing the beta release was available.
We recommend you look at this file before downloading the preview. The
preview file itself can be downloaded using this URL:
This file is no longer available on the net.
The readme file describes things that are not complete or not implemented in this code. One thing not mentioned in the readme is that international characters are not evenly-handled in this preview; we are aware that this is a major issue, especially for users in Eastern Europe, and we have a detailed plan for fixing a broad range of problems in character set handling, but it is not implemented at this stage - it is a priority for early in the v4.0 life cycle though, and several of the more glaring problems will be corrected prior to unrestricted release.
At this stage, I estimate that an unrestricted release is 10-14 days away; thereafter, there will probably be as many as two major releases prior to the end of the year, and we plan to make public betas available more often as well. As I've previously said, I never dreamed that v4.0 was going to involve this much work or take this long, and all I can do is apologize for the long delays, stress that I don't intend to allow them to happen again, and offer my hope that you enjoy the results.
Cheers!
